A new gem in Germany

An idyllic island resort may not be the first thing that pops to mind when you think about Germany, but a revamped boutique hotel could inject new life into ‘Berlin’s Bathtub’. We find out more about Usedom’s answer to the Hamptons.

The task of injecting new life into Strandhotel Atlantic & Villa Meeresstrand was given to international designer Yasmine Mahmoudieh. The design-led concept carefully strikes a balance between historical and modern, transferring highlights from the existing structure into the redesign.

Subtle design elements offer a nod to the hotel’s location on the beach promenade in Usedom, Germany. Mahmoudieh selected fabrics, tiles and woods with a washed-out driftwood aesthetic, while the lilac tones used in some of the lounge furnishings reflect the colours of the sunset across the open water.

The nature theme continues into the public spaces. Above the hotel’s bar guests can see diagonally suspended ceiling lamps that create an unusual depiction of an iconic beachfront resident: the seagull.

Light colours and white/beige bleached oak furnishings adorn all of the hotel’s bedrooms. Combined with the aged wood appearance of the tiles, this light colour palette adds to the bright and airy beach aesthetic. Literary enthusiasts will also be able to spot references to Maxim Gorky and Leo Tolstoy in the rooms.

Design elements in 1922, the hotel’s restaurant, play with the use of light to elevate the guest experience. Mirrors have been carefully placed in the space to bring the sea view indoors, while lighting is designed to look like elegant bubbles floating over the guests below.

Visitors dining at Fauna can experience a culinary adventure designed by Catalan Chef Farran López. Mediterranean flavours and family recipes form the foundation of Fauna’s menu, with a creative touch added to give each dish a Kimpton’s twist.
